Just finished this painting of lock 27e on the Huddersfield narrow canal, had loads of fun painting this one but must say at the start i thought it was not working but got there at the end.

Running late is a totally fictitious scene painted from my mind with not picture reference of a working canal narrow boat heading for the near by village before it gets too dark.

 

Painted in acrylics as always, size is 10x14 on canvas board.

Stay Wet Palette

OK a bit about the Stay Wet Palette.

After reading about them on the net i see that many don't like them , the main reason for this i find is that the colours tend to go quite watery / runny ! i found this to be quite true but also found the way round this that seems to work well.

From the start with my stay wet palette.

OK this is what i do when i change the paper in the stay wet. I use 3 sections / squares of paper kitchen towel and place it in the palette first then lightly spray it with water but remember it is only a light spray to dampen it and not soak it, then i cut a piece of greaseproof paper or baking parchment as it is sometimes called and also spray this as well as it will stop the ends curling up when you place it on top of the paper towel, then just wipe of the excess water if need be.

I found that it is necessary to re-dampen / light spray the paper towel every couple of days if it needs it but it is still quite damp then dont , doing it this way i find that the acrylic paints stay usable but at the same time do not go watery .

It also fits nicely into my pochade box as you can see below in the picture,

even with the lid closed.

 

 

Before i go , i use just ordinary kitchen paper towel and standard baking greaseproof paper for use in my stay wet palette, much cheaper than the spare papers sold by the manufacturer in the art shops or on the net.

Works Great.

 

 

 

My 1st Painting of Lock 39e

I remembered that some time ago i painted Lock 39e ( the one above ) from photo in the studio. Looking at this painting prompted me to go in search of the real lock 39e once more and paint it there and then, even painting from a photo i still changed things a bit .

 

 

 

 

This is the one i did plein air, looks a totally different scene, i think because when painting plein air you tend to use slightly different colours maybe , i don't know.

 

 

Well here where i live in Yorkshire the winter is starting to draw in with much cooler weather, I am a cold arse and just hate winter months. This leads me to think about painting plein air which you might have guessed has gripped me quite a bit , typical with the weather turning cold. I know there are many painters out there which would still enjoy outside painting in the cold but not me , so what to do about it this winter.

 

This got me thinking last night while on the net and i stumbled upon a blog that had a link to a blog about using Google street maps as a sort of virtual plein air painting reference, i thought this was a good idea and something i had not thought of, would this be sort of cheating ? but it would keep me warm.

 

Does anyone else use street maps as a reference to virtually painting plein air , the only problem for me anyway is that street maps don't go down canals which is what i enjoy painting the most but this will make me paint other subjects and may well open a new avenue .

 

Food for thought, well for me anyways.

 

Plein Air 2

Just had to get out again and paint !!!!!!!!!!!!


Now for those that know me you will know that painting outside where people can see me is a really big no no, but you know , we can all change. Even me !!!

Well went out again the other day and yes i forget my camera and even my phone, went again down the canal as i love to paint canals.

I made a promise to myself i would limit the time to 2 hours and not 12 hours like before so i had to get some speed into my painting which i thought would be interesting to say the least.

Using my newly converted pochade box i found it much easier than the last time , talking of time , i said i would not spend more than 2 hours.............well that 2 hours turned into 4 hours lol but still had a great time but still not liking people watching me, somthing i hope goes away.

Well after the 4 hours below is the end result

I tried really hard not to paint two tight as i normaly do but to try and give it some slack .

The painting is of Lock 39e with Marsden Church visible, the house should be more straight but found it hard to get the right angel so left it as is and went for it.

Hi again

Remember in my last post i told you about my art box that i converted into a pochade box well here it is .

This is how it started out , just an art box with like an easel on the lid. It was OK and works quite well but it was more of a table top easel than anything else so i went about making it into a pochade box of some sort and as it turned out it worked quite well .

What i did was to take the easel part of the inside of the lid then then removed the lid hinge and refit the hinge so the lid opened the other way , also the lid clasp fasteners and carry strap and this is what i ended up with .

 

As you can see it was quite an easy conversion to do but wow what a difference it makes when out painting plein air which after ,,,,,,,,,,,,well a long time painting in the studio make life much more simple. Oh , also on top of the tubes of paint my palette will fit nicely and befor i forget 2 thin strips of wood stuck to the top & bottom of the lid so my panels will stay in place and not fall onto my palette.

Next job with my pochade box is to find and fix some sort of fastener so i can then use it with my photo tripod and make life even easier,but for now i have to rest it on my knees when out painting, not ideal but works for now..

Well hope you like my little conversion as i can tell you it makes such a big difference with plein air, oh, and also once i sort something out with the tripod fixing i will post a photo of my full plein air painting outfit ,,,,,,,,,,,,when i have it all .

Plein Air !!

Well just been thinking of having a try at plein air painting !!! so after around a month or so it was time to give it ago,

Up early at around 04.00 am got my gear ready and in the car down to the canal , this was when it hit home, do i really want to do this or shall i just go home and forget about it. At the place i was going to try out i was really not sure and shaking , i really wanted to go home as i knew people would see me and i was not two keen on that .

Anyway, got set up and started at 06. 25 am and after about an hour or so i was really getting into it without a care in the world.  Got a bit carried away with myself and painted right up until 07.15 pm and i had a great time doing it.

My setup i was using was an old paint box where the lid was the easle part of it just like this one

 

 

really not ideal but i got by. On my way home i was thinking i need a pochade box so thoughts starded entering my head on ways to convert my box to what i needed but more about this next time.

 

Anyway at the end of a great day painting my first plein air panting this was the finished painting and for once i am quite pleased with it and i will be painting plein air again.

Life Down the Mill is a fantasy painting, it does not exist .. well I don't think it does. Got the idea for this painting from a selection of photos then put parts of each photo down on my secret sketch pad which is where most of my paintings start life. The painting took shape slowly but after a  few minor changes from the sketch it soon got under way. Painted with the highest artists paints to leave a rich colour of high light fastness

This was painted in the studio from a selection of photos i had , first i did drawings from the photos then put them altogether on paper then painted on canvas board. I went for the old style look which i think turned out rather well.

Enjoyed painting this and to be honest it started out completely different to how it is now , guess i just got carried away with myself ........which happens quite  lot...

Originally it was to be a scene from a section of the Monmouth  & Brecon   canal down in Wales where to the right side of the painting would have been a few low down bushes then looking over distant country side with roiling hills beyond the bridge , but ,   well there you go they don't always turn out the way we want..

Still a nice painting none the less and is now for sale at the Art gallery . The painting has been treated to four coats of acrylic high gloss varnish and is now ready to frame & hang..

This painting is of the peak forest canal looking towards Possett Bridge, near the Navigation Inn in Marple, from Lock 12, Black Wharf Lock. Black Wharf and Moult's timber yard were on the left. An arm serving Hollins Mill led off to the right. Examination of the towpath edge shows where the entrance to this arm was.
