Acrylic Tutorial 2

Lock 25e, with the mills in Slaithwaite in the distance.

Hi and welcome to one more quite rare for me Acrylic art Tutorial. It is of lock 25e on the Huddersfield narrow canal, below is the photo i worked from and as we go along you will see how i some what changed things ?.

OK lets start
The painting is on a small piece of MDF 14x10 which has been primed with acrylic yellow ocher

No drawing to start just used Ultra Marine Blue and Burnt Siena
for the dark and scumbled it in using a filbert hog brush,
Ultra Marine Blue & white for the start of the water.
You can see the different tones already .

More darks for the trees on the far bank added plus the sky. This is where i felt changes coming and so put a bit of the sky colour in the tree area.

Now put in the distant hillside.

Added the mills and distant trees of Slaithwaite and also a bit of colour.

A bit more colour on the distant trees but also notice at this stage i put in the reflections. Colour for the reflections are Ultra Marine , Burnt Siena for the darks ( I never use Black from the tube ) then Cad Yellow added thinly to add a weak green tone .

Now i added the lock with its white railings .

Tree trunks were now painted in on the far bank which looking at the photo of the scene are not there but i thought it would make for a more interesting painting , but that's just my way of painting anyway and cant help myself from changing . At this stage i am thinking that lock in the distance has to go !! just don't look right to me.

Lock now gone, also more light added in the distance.

At this stage i was just playing around with tones by adding a touch of weak burnt siena to then trees in the distance then added the light tone for the path , notice the lock is back again ? oh , also tree trunks painted it on the right side bank.

Dark shady areas on the path now added

Now, big changes !!

On the far bank i added a muck path to take you through the trees and also put in some light areas between the trees. The far bank was painted in and the tree / large bush where the lock was has now sort of moved to the other bank .

More light added to the tree that moved and also the dark tones for the near side bank

So whats new at this stage, if you have not spotted it then look to the far bank where the lock was, you will see i made it wider. OMG not the same as the photo of the scene at all now.
Well, this is as far as i have got and now need to do some real thinking of where i am going to go with this one, Updates on this painting will be posted over the next few days so please call back and see what i came up with, at this stage though i have not got a clue .
Well did a lot more work today on the painting but forgot to take photos. As you can see i finished the trees on both banks and also the bushes at the side of the towpath and also repainted the sky , the white clouds were put in using paint on my finger and lightly rubbing the paint in , i think you get a better cloud that way.

Well this is the finished painting, completely different from the photo at the start but i think it has turned out as a nice colourful painting.
I decided to add some life so put in a guy fishing, I also went over certain parts of the painting with a glaze of Cadmium Red to give that red-ish pink glow throughout the painting.
Below are some close up photos of the painting, guess i am as Thomas Kinkade once said, ` I am an old romantic `

All the Best

Colin.
